WASHINGTON, D.C. — House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) has reached out to his colleagues today, seeking their support for the House Republican Conference's nomination for Speaker of the House. In a heartfelt letter, Scalise emphasized the importance of unity and the need to address the pressing challenges facing the nation.
"I firmly believe this Conference is a family," said Scalise. "When I was shot in 2017, it was Members of this Conference who saved my life on that field. When I made it to the hospital and my family was told my chances of surviving were low, it was the prayers from all of you that carried us through."
Scalise expressed his unwavering love for the country and his belief that the members of the House were brought together to solve the immense challenges facing the nation. Despite facing new personal challenges, Scalise emphasized the importance of fighting for the Conference's shared mission and working together to mend the deep wounds within the Conference.
"Now, more than ever, we must mend the deep wounds that exist within our Conference and focus on our objectives so we can get back to work for the millions of people who are counting on us," Scalise stated.
In his letter, Scalise highlighted his leadership style and track record of bringing together diverse viewpoints within the Conference to build consensus and achieve legislative action. He emphasized the need to turn the conservative agenda into legislative action, facilitate a legislative process based on regular order and member input, and hold the Biden Administration accountable.
While acknowledging the progress made so far, Scalise stressed that more work needs to be done. He called for unity and a collective effort to get the country back on the right track, particularly in conducting critical oversight of the current administration and advancing individual appropriations bills.
"Our strength as a Conference comes from our unity, and we have seen when we unite as a Conference, we can deliver wins for the American people," Scalise said. "Now we need to take those unified positions and work to extract conservative wins from the Democrat Senate and White House by leveraging upcoming deadlines."
Scalise concluded his letter by expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and his belief that everyone has a purpose in being there. He humbly asked for support in his mission to be the Speaker of the House.
