House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and members of the Louisiana delegation have introduced legislation to expand the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area (ANHA) to include Lafourche Parish, Louisiana. The ANHA is a protected area that celebrates the unique culture, heritage, and natural resources of Louisiana.

Scalise emphasized the importance of including Lafourche Parish in the ANHA, stating, "Louisiana has an unparalleled culture and heritage and is home to some of the most unique and special landscapes and traditions in the world. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area protects our region's storied culture and resources, and I'm proud to lead the effort...to ensure that Lafourche Parish is included in this important National Heritage Area."

Congressman Garret Graves, who represents the boundaries of the Atchafalaya Basin, expressed his support for the expansion, stating, "The people and culture of Lafourche Parish are inextricably linked to the heritage of this nationally significant region...it is rewarding that colleagues from all parts of the state have come together to embrace Lafourche Parish and 'America's Foreign Country' – the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area."

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy also voiced his support, highlighting the economic and environmental benefits of the expansion. He said, "A paragon of Cajun culture and a sportsmen's paradise, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is a celebration of the history of Louisiana. This bill extends the footprint while preserving the land and creating jobs."

The expansion of the ANHA was also welcomed by other members of the Louisiana delegation, including Senator John Kennedy, Congressman Clay Higgins, Congresswoman Julia Letlow, and Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. They all expressed their enthusiasm for preserving Louisiana's diverse heritage and providing opportunities for residents and tourists to enjoy the unique landscapes and cultural contributions of the region.

Local leaders in Lafourche Parish also praised the proposed expansion. Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson, III, said, "We are pleased to see Leader Scalise's leadership to modify the boundary to include Lafourche Parish in this legislation." Justin K. Lemoine, the Executive Director of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, added, "With the addition of Lafourche Parish, a place so rich with natural resources and a strong Louisiana identity, our Atchafalaya story is complete."

The inclusion of Lafourche Parish in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area will not only enhance economic development in the region but also provide a clean environment for residents and visitors to enjoy. The expansion will ensure that Louisiana's diverse heritage and invaluable natural resources are preserved for future generations.

The legislation introduced by Scalise and the Louisiana delegation demonstrates their commitment to protecting and celebrating the cultural and natural treasures of Louisiana. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area expansion is a testament to the rich history and vibrant culture that makes Louisiana a truly unique and special place.
