House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and other prominent Republican leaders gathered today to discuss the importance of passing a two-step continuing resolution on the House floor to keep the government open. They emphasized the need to change the way Washington operates and avoid the last-minute, massive omnibus bills that have become commonplace during end-of-year sessions.
Scalise praised Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) for spearheading negotiations that would prevent the House from ending the year with a chaotic omnibus bill. Instead, the two-step continuing resolution would break down government funding into separate bills that expire in January and February, allowing for more transparency and accountability.
The Republican leaders also highlighted the urgent need to address border security, particularly in light of the Biden administration's handling of the issue. Scalise expressed concern over the open border policy and the influx of illegal immigrants into the country, emphasizing the importance of securing the nation's borders.
Another critical focus of the discussion was Iran's role in funding terrorism. Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) highlighted Iran as the largest sponsor of state terrorism, including support for Hamas and other terrorist organizations. Scalise announced that a bill would be brought to the House floor to freeze the $6 billion that President Biden intends to give to Iran. He raised concerns about the Ayatollah's stated intention to use the funds for nefarious purposes, including continuing to support terrorism.
Scalise questioned the Biden administration's decision to provide Iran with such a significant sum of money, given its track record of funding organizations responsible for violence and unrest. He called for a bipartisan vote to block the release of these funds, stating, "Why would you dare allow Iran to get another $6 billion when we know they use that money to fund terrorists like Hamas?"
The House GOP aims to send a strong message by voting to freeze the $6 billion, hoping for overwhelming bipartisan support. The goal is to prevent Iran from accessing additional funds that could be used to finance terrorism.
As the discussion concluded, Scalise emphasized the importance of the week's upcoming tasks and wished everyone a great Thanksgiving.
The Republican leaders' united stance against irresponsible government funding practices and their determination to address border security and cut off funds to terrorist organizations like Hamas demonstrates their commitment to safeguarding American interests both at home and abroad.
