WASHINGTON, D.C. — On June 24, 2023, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement marking the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision.
“Today marks the one-year anniversary of the historic and life-saving Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe vs. Wade and brought us one step closer to becoming a nation that upholds the sanctity of life. After 50 years of fighting to protect the unborn with peaceful marches, prayers, and legal and political battles, the pro-life movement finally saw our hard work and dedication come to fruition. Today, we celebrate that we get to say we live in a post-Roe America.
“Since the Dobbs decision, nearly half of the states in the U.S. have passed strong protections against abortion, and it’s estimated that tens of thousands of babies have been saved. Now, we need to make those protections stronger throughout the nation.
“This fight is far from over – Democrats across the country are still pushing for unlimited abortion funded by taxpayers. In January, House Democrats introduced a bill to allow federal funds to be used to cover abortions, and just this week, while we celebrate the advancement of human rights, Democrats doubled down on their extreme abortion agenda when they filed a discharge petition that would legalize abortion up until the moment of birth.
“House Republicans remain committed to defending life and ending the use of taxpayer dollars to fund abortions. Earlier this year, we passed H.R. 26, the Born Alive Act, demanding medical care for children that survive abortion attempts, as well as H.Con.Res. 3, condemning the attacks on pro-life facilities, groups, and churches.
“We will not stop fighting to protect the life of each and every unborn child until abortion is unthinkable. We will continue to defend those children who are defenseless, uphold the sanctity of life, and provide the care and support mothers deserve,” said Majority Leader Steve Scalise.
