WASHINGTON, D.C. —On Jun 5, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) issued the following statement after Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas failed to substantively respond to a letter from Judiciary, Oversight and Accountability, and Homeland Security Committee Chairmen Jim Jordan, Jamie Comer, and Mark Green requesting vital information on illegal immigrants apprehended at the border with terrorist ties:
“On May 19, 2023, Chairmen Jordan, Comer, and Green sent a letter to Secretary Mayorkas requesting documents and information regarding an increasing number of aliens with terrorist ties illegally crossing the southwest border into the United States. Secretary Mayorkas failed to substantively respond to this important national security request.
"The investigation into the Biden border crisis and particularly its national security ramifications raise more alarming questions that need to be answered. I look forward to working with the three Chairmen to explore all options to gain compliance with this oversight request and hold these Biden Administration officials accountable for not cooperating with Congress.”
Under the Biden Administration, over 1.5 million illegal immigrants have crossed the border undetected. Since these "gotaways" enter the United States without providing biometric or biographic information to agents or being vetted with background checks against law enforcement databases, the open border provides a weakness that terrorists and other bad actors can exploit. It is crucial to our national security that these committees receive the information the chairmen requested in their letter to appropriately assess the risk to our country and ensure the Department of Homeland Security is held accountable for any failure to protect the American people.
