House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, alongside Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, and Congressman Abe Hamadeh, addressed the progress of a reconciliation bill by House Republicans. The bill is set for markup on Thursday and aims to tackle various issues including border security and energy independence.
Scalise emphasized the rapid pace of President Trump's administration upon his return to office. He stated, "We are just getting started...you're already seeing the benefits of President Trump's aggressive approach towards turning Washington back to the people." Scalise compared Trump's current efforts with his first term, noting a more focused approach in delivering results for struggling families.
Discussing the reconciliation plan's focus on border security, Scalise mentioned that it includes commitments made during the election. He explained that it involves building a wall and equipping Border Patrol Agents with necessary tools like night vision goggles and drones. "It's going to be to deliver for border security," he said.
On energy policy, Scalise stated that House Republicans aim to increase American energy production in areas such as ANWR and the Gulf of America. He criticized the Biden administration's policies which he claimed increased dependence on foreign energy. "We're going to reverse that," he said, highlighting plans to export LNG and maintain stable tax rates from 2017.
Scalise also addressed tax policies stating that House Republicans would prevent any tax increases proposed by Democrats. He reiterated their commitment to continuing tax cuts from 2017 while adding priorities like no tax on tips.
The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act was also discussed. This legislation seeks to make fleeing law enforcement a deportable offense. Scalise noted past bipartisan support for similar measures but highlighted previous Senate resistance under Chuck Schumer's leadership. With changes in Senate leadership, Scalise expressed optimism about advancing this legislation.
