House Majority Leader Steve Scalise appeared on Fox News' "The Story with Martha MacCallum" to discuss the impending vote aimed at keeping the government funded. He accused Democrats of working against American families and attempting to engineer a government shutdown.
Scalise emphasized collaboration between House Republicans and the Trump-Vance Administration, highlighting Vice President JD Vance's visit with House Republicans. He stated, "We had JD Vance, the Vice President, come and talk to our members this morning and did a great job of really laying out why it's so important that we keep the government open."
He further claimed that Democrats are attempting to shut down the government to halt progress made by President Trump, including recent international achievements. "President Trump is doing his job," Scalise said. "The Democrats want to shut the government down to stop that progress."
Addressing potential opposition within his party, Scalise mentioned Rep. Thomas Massie as a firm dissenter but remained optimistic about passing the bill despite ongoing discussions with other members.
Scalise also addressed Senate dynamics, attributing any potential shutdown from their side to Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. He noted past statements by Schumer against shutdowns and questioned how he would justify opposing this bill now.
The bill in question includes provisions for military pay raises, which Scalise used as leverage in questioning Democratic opposition: "Our junior enlisted members of the military are going to be getting the largest pay raise in over 40 years. Why would you vote against that?"
