House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, alongside Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, and Congressman Gabe Evans, discussed the progress of President Trump's first six weeks in office. Scalise criticized House Democrats for voting against a budget bill that he claims would have increased taxes by trillions on American families and businesses. He contrasted this with House Republicans' efforts to prevent tax hikes and support Trump's agenda.
Scalise shared Mardi Gras traditions with reporters, expressing his desire to be in New Orleans for the celebration. He noted that "there'll be about a million people from all around the world on the streets of New Orleans celebrating."
Regarding Trump's agenda, Scalise emphasized the importance of Congress's role in passing it. "Tonight, President Trump is going to be celebrating the renewal of the American dream," he stated. He highlighted recent legislative efforts aimed at moving forward with budget reconciliation.
Scalise criticized Democrats for allegedly supporting tax increases on middle-class families. "Every Democrat voted no last week," he said, claiming their actions would impact those earning less than a million dollars annually.
On manufacturing and energy production, Scalise praised Trump's efforts to bring back jobs and reduce costs. "More energy production in America, manufacturing more things in America," he stated as key elements of their legislative package.
He concluded by acknowledging private investments spurred by Trump's leadership: "Almost $2 trillion in private investment that's already being announced." Scalise expressed anticipation for President Trump's upcoming address.
