Republican leaders discuss plans for budget reconciliation at issues conference

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) addressed the progress made at the House Republican Issues Conference in Doral, Florida. Alongside Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), and Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.), Scalise emphasized reconciliation as a key step in fulfilling the mandate given to President Trump by American voters.

Scalise highlighted the unified efforts of the Republican government, stating, “If you think about the last month that we have started unified government, first with the House and Senate, starting off both in Republican hands, and then with President Trump coming in after an amazing week of inauguration ceremonies... Day one, President Trump had the leadership of the House and Senate at the White House to talk business.”

Regarding budget reconciliation discussions, Scalise remarked on its significance: “Of course, budget reconciliation is such a powerful tool to start that process of getting this country back on track.” He noted past challenges but expressed confidence in overcoming current obstacles due to a smaller margin. Scalise stressed unity within their ranks as essential for success.

The conference involved meetings where committee chairmen outlined plans related to budget reconciliation. “We had meetings yesterday where committee chairman that are going to be involved in the budget reconciliation process,” Scalise explained. The discussions included strategies for securing America's border, reducing inflation, and preventing tax increases on American families.

Scalise concluded by emphasizing continued dialogue within their conference to pass significant legislation: “We laid that out, and we've been continuing to have an honest discussion about the differences within our conference...”
