House Majority Leader Steve Scalise issued a statement on the one-year anniversary of the October 7th attack on Israel. Scalise, representing Louisiana, commemorated the lives lost during the attack by Hamas on Israeli civilians. He described it as "the largest murder of Jewish people since the Holocaust," with over 1,200 innocent lives lost.
Scalise highlighted that in addition to the killings, more than 250 hostages were taken by Hamas, and "97 of the hostages taken on October 7th remain unaccounted for." Among those still held are four Americans. He noted that Jews worldwide have faced increased antisemitism following this event.
He emphasized ongoing threats from Iranian-backed groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis against Israel. Scalise pointed out that Israel has also been targeted directly by Iranian missile and drone attacks but mentioned successful defenses due to coordination between Israel, the United States, and their partners.
"Israel has every right to defend its existence and deter violence against its people," Scalise stated. He urged continued U.S. support for Israel's security efforts, stressing that threats to Israel are also threats to America. Scalise concluded with a commitment to preventing future incidents like those of October 7, 2023.
