The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office announced on May 15 that it will increase road and waterway patrols as Memorial Day weekend approaches, aiming to encourage safe travel and boating practices throughout the parish.

The announcement comes as many families prepare for holiday gatherings, outdoor activities, and time on local waterways. The increased enforcement is part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs from May 19 through June 1. Deputies will focus on seat belt use in neighborhoods and along highways during this period.

Sheriff Randy Smith said, “Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and we know many families will be traveling or spending time outdoors. Our goal is simple; we want everyone to enjoy the holiday and make it home safely. Wearing your seat belt and making sure children are properly secured in age-appropriate safety seats can save lives.”

The additional patrols are funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, which also supports year-round efforts against driving while intoxicated (DWI) and underage alcohol violations. On local waterways, the STPSO Marine Division will conduct extra patrols to monitor compliance with boating regulations. Deputies will watch for impaired operation of boats, ensure vessels have required personal flotation devices, remind boaters about no wake zones, and stay alert for emergencies.

Sheriff Smith said that deputies specially trained in marine enforcement and water rescues will be available during the busy holiday weekend to respond if needed. He added: “We want everyone to have fun this summer. But we also want everyone to be safe. Whether you’re driving across the parish or spending the day on the water, make smart choices, stay alert, wear your seat belt and never operate a vehicle or watercraft while impaired.”

As residents plan their celebrations over Memorial Day weekend, officials urge caution both on roads and waterways so that all community members can return home safely.
