House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, alongside Speaker Mike Johnson and other Republican leaders, highlighted the progress on a reconciliation package aimed at supporting small businesses, avoiding tax hikes for most Americans, enhancing energy production, and strengthening the military. Scalise emphasized that eight of 11 committees are expected to complete their markups by the end of the week.
Scalise praised Roger Williams, Chairman of the Small Business Committee, for his efforts in promoting policies beneficial to small businesses. He stated that without congressional action this year, a significant tax increase could affect American families. “If you think about the idea that if Congress were to take no action this year, there would be a four-and-a-half trillion dollar tax increase on American families,” Scalise remarked.
The House and Senate Republicans aim to align with President Trump’s agenda. Scalise noted that seven committees have completed their work on reconciliation and three more are set to do so soon. “We’ve been working incredibly closely with the White House and with the Senate every step of the way because this bill is critically important to American families,” he said.
The reconciliation package includes provisions for tax stability, increased energy production in areas like Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, defense funding, border security enhancements, debt ceiling confrontation, and regulatory reform. The Education and Workforce Committee’s work on student debt protection is also part of the bill. Scalise mentioned that they plan to bring this comprehensive bill to the House floor next week before passing it to the Senate.
