Pontchartrain Health Care Center was the largest nursing home in St. Tammany County during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.
The facility offered 182 total beds, exceeding the county’s average by 55 beds for the period. An average of 102.7 residents received care at the center during those months.
The CMS assigned Pontchartrain Health Care Center an overall rating of 1 out of 5, which is lower than Louisiana’s nursing home average of 2.5.
Greenbriar Community Care Center was the county’s second largest facility with 174 beds, followed by Forest Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which had 172 beds as of the first quarter of 2026.
Pontchartrain Health Care Center recorded $105,898 in total fines and had one penalty during the first quarter of 2026.
Altogether, St. Tammany County, Louisiana, had six for-profit nursing homes in operation.
U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate a continued rise in the nation’s older adult population as younger age groups decrease. From 2020 to 2024, the population of Americans aged 65 and older increased by 13%, while those under 18 declined by 1.7%. Over the past century, the older adult demographic has increased substantially, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A study published in 2021 estimates that about half of adults in this age category, or roughly 28 million people, could need long-term services and support, and more than a third may eventually require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
