House Republican leaders have issued a unified call for bipartisan backing as they prepare for the upcoming consideration of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (H.R. 22). Representatives Steve Scalise, Mike Johnson, Tom Emmer, and Lisa McClain emphasized the importance of the legislation in a joint statement.
They stated, “American citizens — and only American citizens — should decide American elections. House Republicans are determined to codify this commonsense idea with the SAVE Act which puts in place commonsense safeguards to prevent noncitizens from abusing our democratic process. This legislation cements into law President Trump’s executive action to secure our voter registration process and protect the voices of American voters. We urge all our colleagues in the House to join us in doing what the overwhelming majority of people in this country rightfully demand and deserve.”
The SAVE Act proposes that states require individuals to provide proof of citizenship in person before they can be registered to vote. It also mandates the removal of noncitizens from voter rolls, while offering necessary tools for states to implement these measures. The legislation previously passed in the House with a vote of 221 to 198 during the 118th Congress, although it was subsequently blocked by Senate Democrats.
