House Majority Leader Steve Scalise addressed reporters in Washington, D.C., following the successful passage of the Budget Resolution by House Republicans. Scalise emphasized the significance of this vote, highlighting that it initiates the reconciliation process needed to execute the Republicans’ mandate to cut spending, enhance American energy independence, and bolster border security.
Scalise noted, “Everybody has been in the room at different stages. Some members had more questions than others. Every member knows, and I’ve been very candid, there’s still a lot of work left to do.” He stressed the importance of unity and collaboration among House Republicans, stating the collective effort is crucial for delivering on their campaign promises.
A key focus of the budget is generating savings by addressing waste, fraud, and abuse in federal programs. Scalise explained, “The beauty is that the committees get to go deal with that. You can find $1.5 trillion and more. I think most Americans would tell you, please go root out waste, fraud, and abuse.” He provided an example involving Medicaid, emphasizing the need to improve its efficacy for disabled individuals by eliminating misuse.
Among the considerations for savings are Spectrum sales. Scalise remarked on the potential financial impact, saying, “We generate tens of billions, if not close to $100 billion for the taxpayers,” by auctioning off federal assets like Spectrum required for technological advancements.
Scalise also discussed the stabilization of the tax code, advocating for a structure that encourages private investment in the U.S. He asserted, “That yields, by the way, billions more private investment. It’s why you get economic growth when you lock in tax rates and make a more sane, common-sense regulatory structure.” He highlighted the need to prevent tax hikes, which Republicans believe is essential for economic growth and reducing the deficit.
The timeline for completing these objectives is ambitious. Scalise indicated the goal is to have the process wrapped up by the end of May.
