WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) joined Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), Congressman Michael Guest (R-Miss.), and Congressman Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) to discuss what they describe as Democrats’ abuse of the justice system to target President Trump. Leader Scalise pledged that House Republicans would investigate the funding of departments they believe misuse their authority for political purposes.
In light of the recent shooting of two NYPD officers by an illegal immigrant, Leader Scalise highlighted that most House Democrats voted against legislation last month to deport illegal immigrants who have assaulted police officers. He also criticized President Biden’s planned executive action on the border, calling it a political stunt designed to cover for what he termed a self-created crisis.
On the Biden Administration using the justice system to target President Trump, Scalise stated: “Last week was a sad time for anybody in America who believes in the basic tenant that justice is blind, that everybody in America is going to get equal treatment regardless of who they are. We saw from the very beginning of this trial, that Alvin Bragg did not want to just target somebody based on criminal wrongdoing; he wanted to target somebody based on who they were.”
Scalise continued: “And so when you see this weaponization of government against political opponents…this cannot be the new norm for the United States of America. And as Donald Trump said…he’s going to fight this thing…for every American who could be the next person that they go after.”
Regarding House Republicans’ investigation into what they call Democrats’ weaponization of government, Scalise added: “So this Republican majority is going to continue to go and look into the weaponization of government…But we also are bringing legislation you’re going to see…us look at the funding of some of these agencies.”
On President Biden taking executive action concerning border policy, Scalise remarked: “I know my colleague [Rep.] Juan Ciscomani talked about the open southern border…Joe Biden with a pen could fix the problems that he created and he chooses not to…He wants it [the border] to be open.”
Scalise pointed out: “You just saw a couple of days ago yet another glaring example of the failures of the Biden open border policy, and that’s when two more New York Police Department officers were shot by someone here in this country illegally.” He further criticized Democratic opposition: “We had a bill on the House floor that said any illegal who assaults a police officer in the United States…is immediately deported. Do you know that almost 70% of Democrats voted against that bill?”
Additionally, Scalise discussed legislation on veterans and Israel: “And then you turn to what we’re doing this week, standing up for our military veterans…[with] bills…to make sure that our veterans have…the MilCon-VA bill.”
Scalise concluded with comments on supporting Israel against actions by the International Criminal Court: “We’re going to be pushing back on [the ICC], initially, the White House was supporting that effort…now they’ve walked away because their radical-left…does not any longer support…Israel. But we surely do.”
